Turf Disease

Pink snow mold in grassPink Snow Mold
Pink snow mold can affect lawns in autumn, winter and spring. Unlike gray snow mold, pink snow mold does not require the insulation of snow to start the pathogen (although snow cover indeed provides an ideal setting for prolonged duration of pink snow mold, as does long turf).

Pink snow mold can infect any cool season turf-type, though it is seldom severe. Small circular patches with brownish orange borders form throughout the infected area and appear during cold, wet seasons.

Disease Development Favored by:

  • Long grass during cooler months
  • Snow drifts
  • Thatch buildup
  • Debris build up (such as leaves)

Corrective Measures:

  • Aerate for better air circulation
  • Rake out diseased areas
  • Overseed the lawn with a resistant blend
  • Rake leaves in autumn
