Turf Disease

lawn brown patchBrown Patch
Visually, brown patch is circular patches (a few inches to a few feet in diameter) of dead, brown grass sometimes outlined by a ring of violet. This disease appears during high humidity and high temperatures. The grass will pull out easily after infections, though within 2-3 weeks recovery of the turf can be noted. Brown patch can occur on all grass-types.

brown patch lesionsThe leaf of the grass will exhibit gray irregular lesions with a thin tan/brown outline. In the morning while dew is still present, a film of mycelium (web-like in appearance) can be seen on the turf.

High humidity and temperatures are the key contributors to this turf disease. If brown patch or other funguses tend to infect your lawn, try changing your watering routine first. Instead of frequent, everyday watering's try to water once or twice a week for 15-20 minutes per zone. This will allow water to get deep into the soil to promote root growth, but it will not keep the leaf of the grass wet for prolonged periods.

Disease Development Favored by:

  • Poor drainage
  • Stress from mowing too low
  • Improper grass height
  • Prolonged periods of leaf wetness
  • High humidity
  • High temperatures
  • Mowing when lawn is wet

Corrective Measures:

  • Aerate the lawn to reduce thatch
  • Do not water at night
  • Change mower height to reduce stress
  • Promote air circulation
  • Sharpen mower blade to reduce leaf wounds
  • Bag grass clippings and discard
