Summer patch affects Kentucky Bluegrass, Annual Bluegrass and Fescue's. The disease appears during summer and is related to necrotic ring spot where rot is caused to the root and crown of the plant. The disease begins as small patches which can be as large as 12 inches in diameter and form the hollow circle shape as necrotic ring spot (recovered turf will begin to fill in the center).

Areas that are in full sun tend to be susceptible to summer patch due to being in a stressful environment. As temperatures begin to cool, the lawn appears to recover, though the pathogen may remain dormant only to reactivate again at a later time.

Disease Development Favored by:

Low mowing height
Thatch build up
Improper Fertilization
Lack of moisture
High temperatures
Heat stress

Corrective Measures:

Reduce thatch
Aerate lawn
Mow turf 2.5" - 3.5" (depending on turf type)
Water deep and infrequently
Reduce soil compaction
