Chipmunks
Related to the squirrel
Size: about 7" long
Chipmunks are amusing to watch as
they scurry about our lawns; though they can cause damage to our landscape
with their burrows and appetite for seeds, berries and other vegetation
which grows in the yard. The chipmunks burrow entrance is usually 2
inches in diameter and can be as deep as 30 feet. The entranceway does
not have a mound, as not to attract predators, and are usually located
near objects such as stones, tree stumps, wood piles or foundations
so the entrance remains hidden. Their extensive burrows have separate
chambers for food storage, sleeping, and even a 'restroom' to accommodate
their needs.
During the onset of cold weather,
they will enter a ‘restless hibernation’ in which their
heart rate and body temperature decrease and they wake every few days
to feed off of their food stockpile only to go back to sleep again.
Their diet consist of grains, nuts, berries, seeds, mushrooms, and insects;
though may also include small birds, eggs and frogs among other items.
Chipmunks: Damage to properties
Digging bulbs and seeds: In their
search for food, chipmunks will sometimes dig up bulbs and seeds causing
damage to the garden. This can be remedied by applying cayenne pepper
to the area on a normal basis. The smell will not only deter chipmunks,
but will keep other unwanted animals away. A chicken wire fence can
also be used as a barrier, though does require maintenance so the leaves,
stems and roots of your bulbs do not get caught up in the wire meshing.
Burrows:
It is rare that a chipmunks burrow would become a problem in the lawn,
though sometimes the damage needs to be addressed (usually if the burrows
are causing structural damage). To keep chipmunks out, bend hardware
cloth into an 8"-12" long L shape, bury the hardware cloth
about a foot from the point of entry you want to block off. This will
prevent the chipmunk from burrowing in specific areas.
Other
Control Methods:
Chipmunks may try to enter through gaps of the foundation, vents or
other ground-level openings. These spaces can be patched or screened
to prevent entry.
