The box elder bug is mainly a nuisance when its population is high, though even when populations are high this pest does not do much damage to trees or shrubs. Box Elder bugs are attracted to warm, sunny locations and can make their way into homes once the weather starts cooling (the do not bite and are not considered harmful to humans). This pest may overwinter inside homes (attics, walls, under siding, etc) though does not reproduce while there.

What homeowners can do:

Laundry detergent mixed with water in a spray bottle applied directly to the bug will kill it (note: soap can damage plants - spray with caution around the landscape)
Seal cracks and areas where the Box Elder bug may be entering
Applications of insecticides are not usually warranted
