ash borer treeEmerald Ash Borer

The emerald ash borer has been the cause for the death of multiple ash trees and forced quarantines throughout multiple counties, including the surrounding areas of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. The larvae feed on the trees tissue under the bark causing extensive damage while the adults feed on the leaf of the plant. When targeting this pest, it important to target the larvae stage with preventative insect control applications.

Trees and shrubs Attacked:

Damage to look for :

  • D-shaped exit holes through the bark about one-eighth of an inch wide
  • S-shaped larval galleries just beneath the bark (pictured on right)
  • Thinning canopy
  • Vertical splits in the bark
  • Unusual shoots sprouting from the main trunk or base of the tree.

What homeowners can do:

The Emerald Ash borer is a pest which does considerable damage in as little as 1-3 years, Grounds Services can only perform treatment on trees with less than 20% canopy loss due to the nature of the pest (the damage that is seen is damage caused from the previous year).

EmeraldAshBorer.info has a site dedicated to the Emerald Ash Borer.

If you believe your trees or shrubs have been affected with disease or fungus activity, call Grounds Services today for a no-obligations visit at 419-536-4344.
