japanese beetle chemical controlJapanese Beetles

Japanese Beetles can defoliate a tree within a matter of a few weeks (or sooner if the infestation is heavy). We have seen booms of beetle population in areas that previously had no problem (such as Maumee and Monclova areas). Although the damage looks severe, the tree or shrub usually makes a full recovery by the following year - but if damage continues to occur year after year then the tree or shrub's health may decline and experience die-back. The feeding leaves the leaves with a lace-like pattern and looks unsightly. On top of the damage these pest do, they also lay eggs which later hatch to be grub larvae and can devastate turf-grass by feeding on the root of grass.

Japanese beetles are difficult to fully control because they can fly up to 5 miles in search of food. Grounds Services, Inc. highly advises against the japanese beetle traps because they will attract more beetles due to the lure of the pheromone used in the trap (unless the whole neighborhood participates, the traps will be inefficient and possibly more detrimental than no trap at all).

Trees and shrubs Attacked:

Feeds on a variety of trees, though prefers: Apricot, Apple, Birch, Cherry, Crabapple, Crape myrtle, Grape, Hibiscus, Hollyhocks, Japanese maples, Norway maples, Pin oak, Plum, Rose, Virginia Creeper

Damage to look for :

Chew marks through the leaf of the plant (leaving the leaf with a thread-like lace pattern)

What homeowners can do:

  • Destroy scouts as they make their way to your plant (drop the japanese beetle into a bucket of soapy water)
  • Chemical insecticides may be applied to trees and shrubs. Grounds Services, Inc. offers insect control for year-round protection.
  • Apply grub control to the lawn to keep the grub population down.

If you believe your trees or shrubs have been affected with disease or fungus activity, call Grounds Services today for a no-obligations visit at 419-536-4344.
