Tree and Shrub Disease

Sudden oak death can infect more than 30 species of plants and spreads as spores are picked up by rain, wind, insect, animal or mechanical means. Visually, when a plant is suffering from sudden oak death, there will be wilting and dieback of new growth, established leaves will also begin to discolor (paling out at first, then turning brown), and/or bleeding canker(s); depending on what plant is affected will show different visual symptoms. The sap from the bleeding canker attracts beetles which in turn feed off of the tree, weakening it further.

There are injections available on the market to help prevent sudden oak death; though, as with emerald ash borer prevention, this injection should be done annually. Applying fungicides or insecticides will help the tree ward off other activity but does not cure the problem and sudden oak death will persist.
