leafminer damage chemical controlLeafminer

Leafminers are the larvae or maggot stage of many moths, beetles, sawflies and flies. The larvae stage resides within the leaf tissue and feeds leaving trails or blotches as they do. The areas that they feed on will die back, though the damage is rarely significant and the plant usually recovers without incident. Often times, the damage resembles that of fungus or bacterial symptoms.

Trees and shrubs Attacked:

Ash, Azalea, Birch, Fruit trees, Poplar, Sycamore, Walnut, and Willow

Damage to look for :

  • Areas of discoloration
  • Patterns within the leaf that resemble tunneling

leafminer damage

What homeowners can do:

  • Soil injections (chemical insecticides) may be used if needed, though rarely this is the case
  • Allowing for natural predators to control the leafminers is usually effective

If you believe your trees or shrubs have been affected with disease or fungus activity, call Grounds Services today for a no-obligations visit at 419-536-4344.
