Invasive Plants

Ohio has many species of non-native plants which can impact our ecosystem. Homeowners should be aware of these species and help take steps toward keeping their impact at a minimum. This can be done with general lawn maintenance and knowing what plants to look for. The Nature Conservancy in Ohio has a great site dedicated to this as does Ohio Deptartment of Natural Resources.

Amur Honeysuckle

Amur Honeysuckle can grow in a range of soil types and climates as well as full sun to full shade. The plant is invasive and can quickly form a dense canopy which will not allow for other seedlings to grow. These plants can be controlled by manually plucking new seedling growth or with herbicides.

English Ivy

English Ivy is one of the most widely used landscape plants in the eastern United States. The plant forms a thick canopy of growth that does not allow sunlight to reach the soil. The vines will also climb up buildings and plants, eventually chocking out the plants causing death to branches and the whole plant in time.

Tree of Heaven

Tree of Heaven can grow rapidly, reaching a height of 6' in the first year. New sprouts will form on the stump if it is cut down, it is important to fully remove the root. Herbicides may also be used on the stump to keep new growth from returning. New plants may be pulled by hand. There are few wildlife species which use this tree. *Note: There are native trees which look similar to the tree of heaven such as sumac and ash trees.
